Sydney, NSW, Australia (23 May 2023) Raine & Horne, one of the Southern Hemisphere’s oldest family-owned firms, celebrates its 140th anniversary today (23 May 2023), marking a remarkable milestone in the company's history.
One firm, four generations of family leadership – and over 140 years of success
This is the story of Raine & Horne, an Australian business that has become deeply ingrained in the national spirit and the Australian real estate marketplace and earning its place as a super brand and proptech innovator.
Angus Raine, Executive Chairman of Raine & Horne, said, “Even though we are 140 years old, we are a forward-thinking, dynamic and diverse business.
“We have spent millions and millions of dollars, particularly in the past four years, on our property platform for our agents – we call it our technology ecosystem.
“We were the first to introduce AI and social media marketing technology Amplify five years ago, partnering with CCT from Europe.”
Steeped in a rich heritage and a spirit of entrepreneurialism
Established on May 23, 1883, by Tom Raine and Joseph Horne in a commercial building on Elizabeth Street, Sydney, Raine & Horne embarked on its journey.
From its modest origins, this property powerhouse has experienced remarkable growth, venturing beyond national boundaries to encompass diverse markets. Presently, Raine & Horne proudly maintains a strong presence in numerous locations, with 12 offices in Malaysia, two in both the United Arab Emirates and India and, as of April 2023, four offices in New Zealand.
Raine & Horne's success is a testament to the enduring entrepreneurial spirit of Australians and the value of family businesses. Despite the challenges and demands of running a family enterprise, the Raine family has built an enduring legacy. The real estate leader effectively oversees a portfolio of over 120,000 investment properties and achieves impressive sales of approximately $10 billion in properties each year.
Mr Raine said. “Our company has weathered economic downturns, two world wars, and several pandemics, but it has remained steadfast, thriving under the leadership of successive generations of my family, which makes me very proud.
“Recognising that many Australian firms may not confidently endure for 10-15 years, surpassing 140 years and continuing to thrive is a truly remarkable corporate achievement.”
Currently, the Raine & Horne brand employs over 3,000 sales, property management and administrative specialists. It operates a network of more than 300 offices, providing services in the residential, commercial, and rural property markets. Additionally, the brand offers financial services under the Our Broker name and has expanded its operations globally.
Mr Raine continued, “Raine & Horne's success is founded on a strong commitment to ethical standards, individual customer service, and local knowledge.
“Our business model of franchising that my late father, Max Raine[i] launched with great gusto in the 1970s has allowed us to maintain these values while achieving sustainable long-term growth.”
Focusing on the next 140 years
As the company looks to the future, Raine & Horne remains committed to upholding its proud legacy, expanding its reach, and continuing to provide exceptional service to its customers while also leading the way in innovation.
With an extensive and user-friendly website, it receives a staggering 20 million hits annually.
Investing millions of dollars since 2018, Raine & Horne has developed a comprehensive property platform for its agents and property managers. This ecosystem of industry firsts includes game-changing AI, and social media marketing technology Amplify, built in partnership with CCT from Europe.
Raine & Horne was also the first real estate agency in Australia to introduce an online sales and property management appraisal platform called DigiKitPlus.
"DigiKitPlus is proprietary to Raine & Horne, and prior to its release, our sales agents and property managers were overwhelmed with paper documents and brochures.
“With the implementation of DigiKitPlus, our agents can now easily create customised, professional digital marketing materials and send them to potential vendors, investors, and landlords with ease.” Since 2018, the utilisation of DigiKitPlus has resulted in the creation of 55,000 listing and appraisal documents.
Mr Raine added, “We are proud to own the intellectual property behind these innovative products. It is a testament to our commitment to providing unique and cutting-edge technologies that put our offices and their clients ahead of the curve.”
Supporting our communities since 1883
Raine & Horne has a long-standing tradition of supporting local communities since 1883, and this commitment has been strengthened through the launch of the Raine & Horne Foundation.
"Every year, the Raine & Horne Foundation focuses on selecting deserving causes to contribute to, making a positive difference in local communities and beyond," said Mr Raine.
Over the last 18 months, the Raine & Horne Foundation has raised an impressive $500,000 for charity.
The Foundation collaborates with the exceptional, not-for-profit organisation, Dignity in its efforts to combat and ultimately eradicate homelessness in Australia. A significant $50,000 donation was raised for Dignity by selling 3,000 pairs of Swanky Socks as part of its “Take a Walk in their Socks” campaign that ran for the entirety of the fourth quarter of 2021. In total, the Raine & Horne Foundation has donated $140,000 to Dignity since 2021.
In August 2022, the Foundation donated $100,000 to the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR), which connects funding from government, business, and philanthropy with the genuine needs of rural and regional people and communities.
The Foundation's biggest corporate social responsibility engagement to date was a $100,000 donation to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation (GBRF) in 2022. The contribution will aid in the preservation of vital turtle habitats on Raine Island, a significant location visited by the renowned explorer and merchant Thomas Raine in 1815, who was the first European to step on the island. Notably, Thomas Raine happens to be the grandfather of Tom Raine, co-founder of Raine & Horne.
Mr Raine added, "The Raine & Horne Foundation is proud to contribute to these deserving causes and collaborate with these exceptional, not-for-profit organisations to make a positive impact on Australia's future.”
Mr Raine remains optimistic that one of his five children will follow his path and join the family business. “However, the business has grown beyond the need for a Raine to lead it.
“With global expansion underway once again now the pandemic is in the rearview mirror, we have built an exceptional legacy through the stewardship of multiple generations of our firm’s leaders, including my father.
“As we look ahead, the company will continue to be among Australia's enduring brands for many decades to come.”
