SYDNEY METRO UNVEILS WEST LINE PLANS

The detailed designs for the new Sydney Metro West line, which will assist accommodating the 420,000 additional residents moving to the area over the next 2 decades, has been disclosed by Sydney Metro. The plans illustrate the infrastructure, stations and precincts that will be built to extend the railway line 24 kilometre from the Sydney City past Parramatta. Construction is already underway with completion scheduled for 2030.

This development will be the first time in Australia that autonomous tunnel boring machines have been used. These machines will be used to excavate identical 9 kilometre railroad tunnels as part of the $2.16 billion Western Tunnelling Package awarded in February to the Gamuda Australia and Laing O’Rourke consortium. They commissioned the world's leading manufacturer, Herrenknecht, to design, build and deliver these machines. The two mega-machines use AI software developed by Gamuda to control, operate, and monitor many of their functions. Each autonomous machine is 1266 tonne, 165 metres long and designed to mine through sandstone and shale. They will tunnel an average of 200 metres per week with a team of 15 workers per shift.

The confirmed stations for the Sydney Metro West line are in Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays, Pyrmont and Hunter Street. The new Sydney Metro West line is expected to travel Sydney CBD to Parramatta in just 20 minutes, which will assist supporting Western Sydney’s rapidly growing population, future projects and new communities along the route.
